Preventing and curing malaria: carbohydrate vaccines and continuous flow synthesis
Prof. Dr. Peter H. Seeberger,
Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Berlin/D

Peter Seeberger is Director at the Max-Planck Institute for Colloids and Surfaces in Potsdam and Professor at the Free University of Berlin. He is a leading figure in the field of glycobiotechnology (Glycomics), and a pioneer in the development of automated synthesis of complex sugars. His innovative approach "from sugar to vaccines" combines chemical, biochemical and immunological aspects and leads to new insights in the biological advances and relevance of sugar.

The development of vaccine candidates for malaria and other diseases by means of carbohydrate synthesis is a main focus of Peter Seeberger's research. His concern in this field is a reflected by his engagement in the Tesfa-Ilg "Hope for Africa" Foundation, aiming to provide access to malaria vaccines and HIV treatment in Ethiopia.

Peter Seeberger's work is recognized by many honors, most recently he received the Roy L. Whistler Award in Carbohydrate Chemistry 2012

After the Opening Ceremony all participants are cordially invited to the welcome reception.

Welcome Reception
The welcome reception will set the tone for an inspirational European Congress of Chemical Engineering and Applied Biotechnology. This will be an opportunity to make new acquaintances, to meet old friends and to start the congress with a taste of Berlin culture, with drinks and refreshments.
